The Online Student Navigator supports both fully online students and students taking one or more classes online to ensure they are successful in their program of study.  Working with various departments at the college, the Online Student Navigator improves the online learner experience by identifying gaps and proposing solutions.  The Online Student Navigator provides continual communication to online students through online communities, workshops, webinars, and a variety of learning objects to help students persist and complete their courses and programs. The Online Student Navigator gathers information on online students through surveys, focus groups and events to increase student retention, satisfaction and success.  

Essential Duties/Functions:

· Coordinate efforts with Instruction and Student Support Services to ensure the needs of all online students are being met at a distance.  

· Develop a collaborative, online community for all online students.

· Monitor at-a-distance programs and services to ensure that they align with GTCC’s mission, vision and goals.

· Monitor and report on key performance measures that evaluate the quality and effectiveness of support services.

· Work with IR, Registrar, Student Success Center and Records to ensure accurate reporting of online students and programs.

· Host online, interactive events for students.

· Facilitate the eDegree student application process including reviewing applications and communicating with students about next steps and upcoming deadlines.

· Conduct workshops for both potential and current online students to promote their academic success.

· Develop and maintain online student readiness initiative at GTCC to help potential students make educated decisions about online learning.

· Keep informed about GTCC’s state authorization requirements.

· Document compliance with regional accreditation standards related to serving students at-a-distance.  Report gaps in service areas to Director of eLearning and leadership in affected service area.

· Regularly update information on the GTCC website, SSP, Moodle and GTCC portal regarding online services and offerings.

· Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.

Educational & Certification Requirements:

Minimum requirements: 

· Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution

Preferred requirements:

· Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Professional Experience:

Minimum requirements:

· Previous experience with a Learning Management System (Moodle, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).  

· Two or more years teaching online at an accredited post-secondary institution.  

· Previous work experience coordinating student academic programs.  

· Experience using a student information system, such as Datatel, Colleague, Banner, etc. 

· Experience conducting webinars and/or online demonstrations.

Preferred requirements:

· Two or more years teaching online at a community college.  

· Experience in Captivate and Turnitin.


The Online Student Navigator shall possess an understanding of and commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its “open door” policy.  He/she shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned.  The Instructional Designer must be able to:

1. Multi-task projects.  Ask for immediate assistance to delegate and set priorities.

2. Respect diversity and promote an inclusive, culturally responsive environment.

3. Adapt to the changing nature of the college calendar.  Respond accordingly based on the demands on eLearning.

4. Promote excellence in customer service, clear communication and a learner-centered approach.

5. Communicate and promote eLearning with a wide range of individuals and constituents.

Working Conditions:

1. Must be able to get to other offices, buildings, campus locations and off-site locations as necessary to complete requirements of the job.

2. Typical day shift 40-hour work week, but must be able to work on-campus flexible hours, if needed.

3. Physical requirements include periods of sitting at a computer and standing. 

4. Must be able to lift, pull/push and carry up to 20 pounds.


1. Criminal history checks, with acceptable results, are required. 

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

· Serve on college committees as requested.

· Participate in job-related workshops and training to enhance job performance.

· Attend departmental meetings and the college’s All Personnel meetings.

· Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
