Summary:

The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate the preparation and setup of science laboratory experiments, exams and activities. Other duties include, purchasing and taking inventory of supplies and materials, maintaining proper waste disposal in labs and maintaining/repairing equipment. The Science Laboratory coordinator works closely with faculty members and part-time laboratory assistants to both plan and improve the laboratories each week for class. The incumbent must practice good interpersonal skills and be able to work independently.

Essential Duties/Functions:

* Prepare and clean-up of weekly biology laboratory sessions.

* Order and maintain the inventory of laboratory and research supplies, equipment, and specimens.

* Maintain and clean instructional materials for laboratory use (e.g., microscope slides, models, disarticulated skeleton boxes, etc.).

* Organize and clean the biology prep and storage rooms.

* Maintain and coordinate repair of all laboratory equipment.

* Assist in laboratory practical examination set-up and disassembly.

* Maintain and provide animal care for the department’s salt water aquarium.

* Consult regularly with biology faculty to ensure quality of laboratory instructional activities.

* Handle and dispose of hazardous waste in accordance with federal and state laws.

* Orient part-time adjunct instructors in the use of the lab

* Recruit, train and supervise student part-time laboratory employees

* Maintain pure microbiological cultures and other live organisms to support laboratory exercises.

* Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.

* Participate in relevant national, regional and state professional development initiatives.  

Difficult Challenges

1- Prioritizing the work based on faculty requests. 
2- Ensuring that evening labs are given adequate attention.

QUALIFICATIONS
Educational & Certification Requirements:

Minimum requirements: 
-Bachelor’s degree in a laboratory science (e.g., biology, chemistry, etc.) or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
-Current driver’s license in good standing.

Preferred requirements:
-Bachelor’s degree with an academic concentration in microbiology, cellular/molecular biology or biochemistry from a regionally accredited institution.
-OSHA chemical or biological hazard certifications.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Professional Experience:

Minimum requirements:
-3 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory environment.
-Experience with chemicals used in laboratory environments to include hazardous material disposal regulations.
-Experience with biological materials utilized in laboratory environments to include, microbes, cell culture and other live organisms. 

Preferred requirements:
-Greater than 3 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory environment.
-Experience supervising student employees.
-Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, i.e., Word, Excel and Outlook.

- Experience working in a laboratory setting; preferably in an academic setting.

- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are required. 

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

- Managerial experience in a laboratory environment. 

Departmental/Job Specific Requirements:

The following (compliance) training is required and must be completed within the first 30 days of hire with annual refresher training thereafter: 

* Ethics
* Safety/Shooter on Campus
* Personal Information Protection Training (PIP)
* Anti-Discrimination/Harassment& Title IX
* Other training may be required as determined applicable.
* Ability to lift 50 lbs.
* As this position supports multiple campuses, travel will be required.
* Evening and weekend hours may be required to fulfill some responsibilities.

Working Conditions:

* Work requires long periods of walking or standing.
* Work requires carrying objects or loads that weigh greater than 50 pounds.
* Frequent (30% - 70%) exposure to hazardous chemicals, filth, fumes, adverse weather, or personal health and safety risks.
