Summary:

The program director will provide the vision and leadership required to support and enhance the mission of the Aviation Electronics Technology program. Primary administrative responsibilities include program development/management, budget administration, providing program supervision, developing and maintaining effective industry partnerships and providing mentoring to part time faculty.  Instructional responsibilities require a broad-based knowledge of the aviation industry and requirements of a comprehensive Aviation Electronics Technology program.  The individual must meet Transportation Security Administration (TSA) badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating Area at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) airport.  The Program Director is a member of the full-time faculty and reports to the Director of Aviation Programs.

Essential Duties/Functions:

Administrative 

1. Provides leadership and management to the overall Aviation Electronics Technology program curriculum development/review including ensuring establishment of effective student learning outcomes and related assessment methods.

2. Develops class schedules and faculty assignments in coordination with the Director of Aviation Programs and area faculty.

3. Supports Aviation Electronics Technology students through the academic program ensuring retention and graduation.

4. Provides oversight of program budgets and inventory for all supplies and equipment.

5. Participates in the college’s hiring process; orients new full and part time faculty.

6. Participates in providing evaluative feedback to faculty/staff regarding job performance.

7. Mentors part-time faculty to ensure academic quality and consistency.

8. Identifies/promotes professional development for self and staff to ensure continued program relevancy. 

9. Maintains knowledge of current industry standards by developing relationships with industry leaders, experts and companies.

10. Continuously evaluate national, regional and local workforce trends in the Aviation industry to ensure curricular relevancy.

11. Assumes direct instructional responsibility for components of the Aviation Electronics Technology curriculum in accordance with established college guidelines.

12. Coordinates outreach and develops/maintains relationships with industry-related personnel and employers to promote the advancement of industry employment for graduates.

13. Ensures curricular compliance with all regulatory requirements of the FCC.

14. All other duties as assigned by the President or designee.

Teaching

Prepare & teach departmental courses to include:

* Developing learner centered lesson 

* employing teaching strategies & instructional materials for different learning styles

* incorporating, as pedagogically appropriate, current technology in classroom, distance learning and laboratory environments

* creating and modeling a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population

* preparing, distributing and utilizing instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media and other devices as appropriate

* updating and revising curriculum to maintain currency

* developing new courses as needed to support the instructional mission

* participating in the development and review of course and program/general education outcomes as appropriate

* developing, conducting and documenting appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education as appropriate

Professional Development

Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by:

* participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in field; maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation

* participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies

Administration

Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records to include:

* Maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment. 

* providing for the security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions

* maintaining student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using a variety of technology-based programs (e.g., Colleague, WebAdvisor, Moodle)

* complying with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations

Student Support

Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:

* conducting recruiting activities

* providing academic advising

* promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success 

* assisting students with the registration and graduation process

* referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate

College Service

Support college-wide endeavors to include:

* collaboration with faculty and staff from other divisions/departments to promote communication, coordinate schedules and support student success

* serving on department, division and college committees

* participating in GTCC institutional initiatives

* collaborating with educational partners, business/industry and/or external agencies as appropriate to promote the instructional mission of GTCC

* supporting collegiality and teaching excellence by actively participating in the professional development of new and veteran faculty (e.g., mentoring and peer observation)

* participating in extracurricular student activities/clubs

* attending college professional development sessions, college/division/department meetings, graduation and convocation, as required

Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills:  adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.

QUALIFICATIONS
Educational & Certification Requirements:

Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Aviation Systems, Aviation Electronics (Avionics) Technology or Electronics from a regionally accredited college/university  - Valid FCC General Radiotelephone Operator’s License or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire. 
- Valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Mechanics Certificate with Airframe and Powerplant ratings

Preferred requirements:
-Master’s degree or higher in Aviation, Electronics or a related field from a regionally accredited college/university
- Valid National Council of Aeronautics Transportation Technology (NCATT) certification or the ability to attain it within one year of hire.
-Non-Destructive Testing and Composite Repair Certification

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Professional Experience:

Minimum requirements:
-Five years relevant documented experience in the aviation industry.
-Experience teaching and/or conducting industry training in an aviation technical field.
-Management experience in either an academic post-secondary institution or industry setting, to include employee supervision.

Preferred requirements:
-Greater than five years documented experience in the aviation industry.
-Experience teaching in a post-secondary institution.
-Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
-Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery electronics.

1. The individual must meet TSA badging requirements to function in the Airport Operating Area at Piedmont Triad International (PTI) airport. 

2. Individual must be able to safely operate aircraft and aircraft electronics.

Working Conditions:

1. May include teaching day and evening and on multiple campuses

2. Position may require standing for extended periods of time, stooping, walking, climbing, and bending to supervise students in confined areas inside, underneath, and on top of aircraft, as well as on elevated work stands and platforms.  

3. Exposure to hazardous materials is possible and will require safe handling, use and disposal.  Some classes require using flammable and/or inert high pressure gases, and using high pressure hydraulic equipment.

4. Lifting, and the positioning of heavy equipment in preparation for classes and labs is required.  

5. Work may be required in an environment that varies from hot to cold (seasonal), which can be both noisy and dusty, and require standing for lengthy periods.

Other:

Criminal history checks, with acceptable results, are required.
